  2.              GOODBYE COMMODORE - SEE YOU LATER

  5. Commodore International have gone  out  of business, leaving
  6. Commodore UK and Europe in  the lurch. Commodore Electronics
  7. are also in  voluntary  liquidation  and  production  of all
  8. computers, including the Amiga, has stopped.
  9.  
  10. Commodore, Atari's deadly enemy, started  forty years ago as
  11. a typewriter  repair  service.  In  1975  they  entered  the
  12. computer market, and  eventually  became  very big business.
  13. However, they began to  make  losses  and  by 1990 they were
  14. trading  in  negative  equity.  On   April  29th  1994  they
  15. announced they  were  going  out  of  business.  Atari began
  16. jumping  for  joy,  until   they   realised   that  the  two
  17. "profitable" sections  of  the  company,  Commodore  UK  and
  18. Europe, were going up for  sale.  It  soon became clear that
  19. some  top  companies   were   interested;   Sony,  Nintendo,
  20. Panasonic and Phillips. This  was  when  Atari  began to get
  21. worried.

  23. If a huge, multi-million  company  such  as  Sony took over,
  24. Commodore would soon be back on  their feet, selling as many
  25. as  50,000  computers  and  consoles  a  month.  Sony  could
  26. advertise in magazines, on the radio  and TV and in national
  27. newspapers; money would  be  no  problem.  If  Nintendo took
  28. over, things may be  a  little  better.  They might drop the
  29. Amiga computer, but produce a console. However, this console
  30. might  take  over  the  Jaguar  which  would  be  bad  news.
  31. Panasonic and Phillips are also big trouble. Like Sony, they
  32. are huge companies  with  factories  and  offices in several
  33. companies. They could easily destroy Atari's market.

  35. So, it  was  decided,  that  Atari  should  consider  buying
  36. Commodore. Or at least buy shares in Commodore. Look through
  37. any Amiga magazine and you'll see  the name Jack Tramiel and
  38. obscene comments as Amiga owners  cringe at thought of being
  39. taken over by Atari.  So  what  will  happen? Well, we don't
  40. know for sure yet,  but  we'll  keep you informed. Commodore
  41. may be dead, but, unfortunately for some, the Amiga is still
  42. alive - and selling.  But  what  really  scares  me is who's
  43. next? Atari? IBM? Apple?
